Deadlift Shoes & Footwear Guide

Why Use Deadlift Shoes?

Deadlift shoes (or slippers) have thin, flat soles that minimize the distance the bar travels. Even a half-inch reduction in ROM can add pounds to your deadlift. They also provide better floor feel and stability.

Deadlift vs Squat Shoes

Unlike squat shoes with raised heels, deadlift shoes are completely flat. Raised heels put you at a mechanical disadvantage for deadlifts by shifting weight forward and increasing ROM.

Footwear Options

Deadlift slippers: minimal protection, maximum floor feel. Wrestling shoes: flat, grippy, more protection. Converse/Vans: widely available, flat sole. Barefoot: maximum floor feel where allowed.

Choosing the Right Option

For competition, deadlift slippers offer the lowest profile. For gym training, wrestling shoes provide durability and traction. Sumo pullers especially benefit from shoes with good lateral grip.
