Understanding Wilks Score

The Wilks formula was developed by Robert Wilks to provide a fair comparison of relative strength between powerlifters of different body weights. It uses polynomial equations to calculate a coefficient based on bodyweight, which is then multiplied by the lifter's total.

How Wilks is Calculated

Wilks Score = Total × (500 / Σ(ai × bwi)) where the coefficients differ for male and female lifters. This normalizes totals so a 60kg lifter can be fairly compared to a 120kg lifter.

DOTS vs Wilks

DOTS (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring) was introduced in 2019 as a modern alternative. Many federations now use DOTS as it's considered more accurate for extreme bodyweight classes and has been validated against larger datasets of competitive results.
